Shelby, the last contest of the season for us. This is one of favorite contests and we have missed only a few of them. This was the 25th year and also the last year for this great contest. We are deeply saddened to see it go.
We also managed a 9th place in ribs, 13th in chicken. Brought the big meat scores up, which we have been struggling with all year. Finished 13th overall.
Not a first but another it's been a long time....years. we helped do a judging class many years ago when Laurens was a young contest. Got a request at the last minute to judge. The contest sure has grown. Plus it was an opportunity to stop at 2 of favorite places to eat in King's Mtn. Mountain View for breakfast and Love's Fish box for supper.
Back to back contests this week. Our 3rd year cooking Newton. This week we came in 2nd in People's Choice. We have been struggling in the big meats this year, so this week we went back to cooking them the way we used to, before class. Our score improved 31 points and we got a 10th place call in Pork. Chicken was 4th place this week.
Another good weekend is Salisbury. Thanks to Dean for coming and helping. As always Gary did a jam up job. Lunch at Hap's Grill. Friday fellowship, friends and food hosted by Pickin Porkers. Breakfast and cupcakes on Saturday morning. We won another People's Choice and 5th place in chicken.
This year has been a year of firsts. We cooked at the Mountain High BBQ Festival for the first time. It is a nice drive from the house. Brian went up on Friday and I came up Saturday morning. We managed a 7th in ribs. Again the big meats killed us.
Another great trip to Asheboro to judge the Pigs & Pedals contest. Had a few good entries. Asheboro always foes a great job. And love the cupcakes.
Greenwood is another contest we haven't been to in a number of years. Too hot to be cooking on payment, so it is a good one to judge. The judging had very good air conditioning! Part of our goodie bag was a very nice contest metal travel mug. There were a few good entries, some average and some not good. Overall it was a good trip and on the way home we stopped at one our new favorite places to eat. had seafood at Love's Fish Box in King's Mountain.
It has been a long time probably 10 years since we last cooked at Tryon, so we gave it a go this year. it was nice to be back and to see old Tryon friends, Carl and Jim Tabb.
First time cooking since it was moved from the ball field. part of our cook's gift was a very nice Blue Ridge bbq hat. The weather was great. We didn't place in anything nor finish well. Not quite sure what the issue is, other than we seem to be going backwards instead of forward.

Candy is a team member, certified judge, table captain and IT person for the team. She joined the team in 1999 and assists the head cook.
