Another great contest by Gary and Tilly's. The weather was perfect, not hot, nice breeze and no rain. We won People's Choice again for the 2nd year in a row. Placed 7th in chicken. Scores were pretty close, while the ribs scored well didn't place in the money. Thanks to our sponsor Royal Oak.

Had another opportunity to judge the Festival of Discovery contest. man was it hot, glad we were inside. Got a cool tie-dyed contest shirt.
Woodruff SC Great weekend with no rainout on Friday like last year.
4th in chicken and 2nd in People's choice. This was our 4th contest of the year. As always it was hot in Evans GA. It was good to see our old friends the Smoking Triggers. Didn't care for the team layouts this year in order to accommodate more music goers. It had us blocked in and luckily the team behind us left before awards. Brian had to back the trailer out to the parking lot so we were able to leave Sat. after awards.
![]() Another fine job by Eddie and the city of Kannapolis. Lots of rain in the days before, so the ground was soft. Had a really good cook, we thought the food was pretty good. Came in 2nd in People's choice, Good scores with chicken, but the category was tight. Chicken only managed 12th, and the ribs really let us down. still struggling with the big meats. A change in the placement of the vendors this year led to us not being able to get back in the cook site after returning from supper. couldn't get back in until after the fireworks. Still having the road blocked i came across the field the wrong way, not good. This is where I started from. And this where Brian ended up.
We thought this was the last one, but were told next year will probably be the last.
This is one of the first contests we ever cooked in. The weather was great, especially for Kings Mtn......No RAIN! After having a good turn out in GA, didn't place this week. Chicken was 11th. Pork and brisket a big let down again. First contest of the season started off as an adventure. Friday morning starts off as usual, stopping at one of favorite breakfast places.....Mountain View. Got there at 6:15 to discover they didn't open until 6:30. So, we wait, now 15 minutes behind schedule. Doors open, and find out the cook hasn't showed. Stopped at a Waffle House on down the road.
Just as we are getting into Greenville at 8AM, hit rush hour traffic. Stop and go in the center lane and the battery light comes on. Alternator only putting out about 7.5 amps. Finally get off at the next exit, and just over the bridge, we find a Goodyear store. As it turned out, it was a broken alternator wire. So only a 45 minute delay and a 3rd of the cost of replacing the alternator, we're on the road again. Arriving 2 hours behind schedule, we get all setup. it was rather windy all day Friday, and chilly through the night. Weather on Sat was great! Ate a great little dive Friday night, the Oyster Bay. Conch fritters and fish tacos. Managed to pull off a 6th place ribs, 1st in pork and 18th overall, out of a good crowd. It was good to pull up one the big meats after struggling in htat area last year. However the chicken was not were it normally is. The trip home was an adventure too. Saw a billboard on the way down for a restaurant we wanted to try on the way back. Pull in and it was closed. Back in the truck and pulled off in Anderson. Went to Cracker Barrel, 30 minute wait, so back in the truck. Found a Hardees in Anderson and we were the only ones there. A new year, and new bbq season coming up. We will be getting an early start with adding a new contest in GA to our schedule. And glad that Winston Salem is back. But we have also lost Tryon and Shelby this year. Going to be doing the big meats the way we finished up the year and hope we have a better year than in 2016.
Hope to see you down the road. |
